The intense summer heat seems to have affected my desire to keep posting here regularly, so I've decided to take it easy here at Crooked Lurve until the end of the season. It seems that mostly I created this blog as an escape (from schoolwork, stress, and the like) and right now there ain't a whole lot I need to escape from. I wish that for just one week I didn't have to worry about work or money or pushups or rent or school and I could just take to the road. I want to head west to the great parks covered in evergreen where water shoots from ancient springs. I want to look ahead of me and not know where the mountains end and the sky begins. Last night, I watched the heat storm move in, stood at the kitchen window and drank a glass of water. The trees were black and singular, beat back by the wind. I don’t know what to say. I want there to be something to say, even just to myself. The wind whipped out of the storm and when the landscape lit up with lightning, syllables took shape in my head but nothing stuck. I filled my glass of water again.

There’s a way back. We tore holes and they were big enough to let us out so they are big enough to let us back in. There’s a skeleton beneath all of these— ‘things’ is the word?—things that have been happening. That storm. There was a language there and I know we both speak it. There has to be a way back. None of this makes sense. I’m moving somewhere west in August. I hope that is far enough away from all of this.

As you may know, one of the biggest things on my summer to-do list is learning how to cook. I've been trolling around food blogs lately, but all of the recipes seem woefully beyond my skill level (which I would say is in the easy-mac area). There is also the whole "I dont have enough money to buy food" problem. What else is new.
Then I came across these photos of homemade gnocchi on She Eats Bears and I've decided that by the end of the summer I shall be able to make this. I mean, potatoes, pasta, and maybe even a little bit of cheese? It's like heaven on a plate.

My apologies for the lack in posts this past week, I was just too busy out having fun, to be honest. Today is my last day in Barcelona and I can't believe it. For a long time early in my stay here I was not sure if I had made the right choice in studying abroad, but slowly this city grew on me while my love for my home began to fade to the background for a while. The weather here is finally, mercifully beautiful, and after months of rain and cold Barcelona now seems like paradise. I spent the past week drinking cava on the beach, spending time with the dear friends I've made here, sleeping on park benches and lifeguard chairs, and watching the sunrise. Maybe this is what people rave about when they talk about semesters abroad? I am so excited to go back to the states and see the mama and my friends, but I'm surprised to find that I am mourning the loss of a part of me. I may have resisted for quite some time, but at long last I can finally say that Barcelona, I love you.

Life Abroad: Home

I guess one of the challenging things for me about living abroad is the notion of home. Back in the states, my actual "home" (the house in which I grew up and where my mother lives) is a place where I only spend one month out of the year. For me, my real home is school. I love the valley. One of the things that I cherish most about the valley are the cafe's, places where I can spend lazy Sundays drinking coffee, reading, doing homework, and people watching. I dont know why, but cafe's and coffee shops are really only one out of a few places where I truly feel at peace. They are like my temples, my cathedrals, my sanctuaries. I've had a hard time finding one here. Yesterday afternoon I roamed the streets of El Guinardo trying to find a bit of home. No such luck.

So literally 4 hours after my last post, my internet ceased to function. Since the Spaniards dont consider Friday a working day (and why would they) I had to wait four excruciating days to get it fixed. Furthermore, the techno-retard that I am learned that having IGB internet means I have to seriously cut back on my browsing. Therefore, for the time being, I shall be only blogging on Mondays and Wednesdays when I have access to campus wi-fi. I'm sure you find this news a travesty, and are currently wondering how you will possibly make it through this crazy journey called life without me, but I mean the Russians have been surviving for decades on nothing but their cold, cold tears, so I think we can make it through this.

I also suffered another setback this week when I learned that I don't have access to the loan I was going to use for spending money. I'm used to living frugally, so its no biggie, but being left behind whilst the friends I've made here go off to explore Europe is not fun. But hey, at least I'll lose weight from not eating all the food I can't afford! There's a bright side to everything I suppose. As many of yall know Ive never been an optimist, but I'm all alone in Europe, so I think a sunny outlook is essential at times like these.

Well, after two long weeks here in Spain, I finally have the internet. Hallelujahpraisethelord. I'm not gonna lie, the first 10 days or so here were really rough. I was so homesick that if I did have the internet I probably would have bought meself a ticket home, because after all is said and done, I am a coward. I kid I kid (sorta). Barcelona is a beautiful city and cleaner than most urban areas I've been to in America. Spanish is kicking my ass hard like I expected it would, but I think maybe perhaps I'm kinda getting better. I went to my first ever club (a rather underwhelming experience) and stayed out till 5am. This was a week ago, and I don't know if I've recovered. I am an abuela. Deal with it.

The weather here is a tricky bastard that likes to give you a bit of hope one day of the approaching spring, only to pour ice cold Spanish rain on you for days on end. Olé. I intend to return to blogging here at the ol' lurve whilst throwing in a few tales about my travels. I would love to be able to be snooty and cultured and do this in Spanish, but how bout I just throw in a word her or there and call it a day ok?

So my hooligans, it seems that another year is drawing to a close. As I look back on the past 12 months, I see a lot of changes (mostly positive ones) but also more of the same old shite. New Year's Resolution Number One: stop worrying so much god dammit. In ten days I'll shall be embarking on a new adventure broke as sin and as scared as a child but I'm gonna embrace this experience and take all I can from it (here's hoping). As for tonight, let's wave goodbye to 2009 and usher in a hopeful new year.
